UCLA football upsets No. 16 LSU at Rose Bowl
PASADENA — Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and the UCLA football team (2-0) pulled away from 16th-ranked LSU (0-1) in the second half for the 38-27 victory, the Bruins’ second consecutive nonconference victory this season.
The Bruins’ victory also spoiled former USC coach Ed Orgeron’s return to Southern California.
Thompson-Robinson completed 9 of 16 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns against the 16th-ranked Tigers. The Bruins scored 10 or more points in each of the final three quarters after being shut out in the first quarter.
The defense proved it could bend but wouldn’t break, with several defensive stands against the LSU offense.
UCLA also kept the Tigers’ scoreless in the first quarter but allowed the game’s first touchdown, when LSU quarterback Max Johnson completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kayshon Boutte with 12:34 left in the second quarter.
The Bruins answered the Tigers’ touchdown quickly, scoring a touchdown on the first play of the following drive. Thompson-Robinson completed a 75-yard pass to tight end Greg Dulcich.
Dulcich finished the night with three catches and 117 yards. Receiver Kyle Philips helped put the game out of reach, catching a 45-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Johnson finished the night completing 26 of 46 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns for LSU. UCLA linebacker Caleb Johnson intercepted one of Johnson’s passes, returning it for 34 yards and giving the offense good field position.
The Bruins’ turned the turnover into points, with Thompson-Robinson throwing a 14-yard touchdown to receiver Chase Cota.
Zach Charbonnet rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Brittain Brown rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.
The Bruins will host Fresno State Sept. 18 in the final nonconference home game of the season, following a bye week.
